Rick,

I appreciated the Vfemail news update and have a couple of questions in regards to it.

1) "5% of all users use the web interface. That means any possible Ad revenue has extremely low exposure"

I assume that is in regards to those of us who stay logged into our web mail?

2) "And the big one - 90% of all users are free users. I'm considering removing SMTP and POP support for free users."

I can see where this would help a great deal. Many times I've wondered about the member spammers - the ones who post birthdates which I'm positive accounts for over 95% of the birthdate listings.

IF these member spammers were removed & banned, wouldn't that alone free up a Lot of services at VFEmail?

This issue has bugged me for a very long time since I am well aware that the majority of spammer members come from a very small amount if IP addresses... Yet they are allowed to remain. And VFEmail often experiences clogged up email queues which are surely caused by a lot of this particular issue.

That's correct. Webmail use is very low.

That's only applies to the Forum - which has even lower usage than webmail. Though it should have lower usage.

The forum is completely separate from the email system. In fact, I highly doubt the forum spammers are even the same people as the email spammers. Most of the email spam is Nigerian Scam type stuff, where the forum stuff I see is minimal and typically a web link. Removing forum users that were created by automation won't really do much at all. It's like deleting a bunch of files on your hard drive - unless you're actually running out of space, it's nothing more than cleanup.

Rick

Rick,

thanks for taking the time to reply to my questions.

I realized later that I should have said "resources" rather than services.

I do stay logged into my mailbox to try to catch spam and move it into the spam folder so that it doesn't reach my pc.

But at the same time I also always keep the main Forum page open which has advertisements on it.

So glad that the system seems to have stabilized which not only helps everyone but also gives you a break. :D

..Hold on. People are signing up here -- and /not/ using the imap features?

 wth?

edit: Just to add something informative *cough* ..vfemail.net still is the one single place where you can get:
- ssl-encrypted imap (with full folder functionality and imap idle that actually works)
- calendar hooks for ical files

..for a one-time $15 fee. Actually, I think more or less all of it is also available for free..

Anyway, this means that for an extremely meager cost, you can use practically any phone and device to sync to your e-mail, securely, without downloading every message, or "fetching" more messages than the one you actually want. It's a little bit terrible if not people are actually using this when they sign up..

@rick - won't pop3 also typically increase the traffic on the servers?
