Retrieving passwords

Post by Havokmon » Tue Jul 29, 2003 7:16 am

On the email page i cannot find a forgot password link . I think it will be a good option there.

How do you think it should be implemented?
1. Send the password to the original email account that was supplied upon registration?
2. Ask for the 'Secret Word' and allow the user to supply a new one?

I think either way it would be best to create a new password for the user.
I'll look for a module first, it's easier to keep the code in line that way ;)

This is my first post here and would like to wish u the all the best in ur efforts.

regarding the question, my suggestion or opinion would be:

1) to send the (newly generated) password to the alternative email address that is currently existing in the user profile. The important thing is that the user must be able to update his/her alternative email address whenever he/she wants

2) if u like to implement secret question and answer, i would suggest you that the user should be given full control to change his secret question and answer when he/she wishes to change. When the user gives the correct combination of the secret question and answer, 2 options may be given to the user namely, the newly generated password may be sent to the alternative email address or the newly generated password might be shown on the screen.

Secret Word!

I think it is better to ask for the 'Secret Word' and then automatically give the user online a provisional new password. That's the way myrealbox.com does it and it works fine.

Thanks Rick for such a new feature!

I think yuvaraj hit the nail on the head.

The trick is where to put that, and how to do it without making future upgrades to existing packages a PITA ;)
